5 Signs It's Time for a New Glass Window

Tuesday, 17 March 2020

Do you know if you need replace your glass window? This article will tell you the warning signs it's time for new windows.

We understand that there's something nostalgic about an old glass window. But old windows simply aren't practical.

In fact, they can be downright unsafe.

So this begs the question — is it time to replace those old windows in your home?

We'll take a look at five tell-tale signs that the time has arrived.

1. Higher Energy Bills

Obviously, your energy bills change from season to season. You can expect your heating bills to be higher in the winter months while cooling bills rise in the summer.

However, if you have older windows and have noticed a steady increase in your energy bills, it could be a result of your older windows. Single pane windows are far more vulnerable to leaks.

So that means that a fair amount of the heat from your furnace or cooling from your air conditioner are going right out the window.

Newer double glazed windows are much more efficient and less prone to those leaks that let air transfer in and out of your home.

2. Outside Noise Coming in

While the vast majority of windows aren't soundproof, you certainly shouldn't be hearing every sound of your neighbourhood when your windows are closed.

If that's the case, it could be that your windows aren't sealed correctly, or that the seals are failing. You'll need to replace them.

Double glazed glass windows are insulated to decrease outdoor noise, which is especially helpful if you live in a busy neighbourhood or on a busy road.

3. Stickiness Upon Opening or Closing

Many of us have a couple of "trick" windows in our homes. These are the windows that you have to jiggle or jam in a certain way to keep them from getting stuck in place.

Nothing lasts forever. Old windows may be plagued by corroding aluminium, warped wood, or hardware that's simply seen better days.

If you've got the magic touch to handle the problem, it might not seem like a big deal. But should that window get stuck in the event of a fire, you're looking at a serious safety issue.

4. Soft or Chipped Window Frames

As important as the actual window is the window frame. After all, this is the window's foundation.

So if you have wooden window frames that are heavily chipped or are soft to the touch, then it's likely they need to be replaced. Otherwise, you're looking at wood rot and water infiltration.

If you're going to replace the frames, you'll need to put new windows in with those frames. Putting old windows in new frames just makes no sense.

5. Condensation on Glass Window

Do you regularly see condensation on your windows?

Condensation alone is not a reason to panic. A rainy day may occasionally cause it. If the condensation is between two panes of glass, however, then it means the window's seals have failed.

Those failed seals are a sure sign you need new windows.
